2010 Competition: Breakaway

Information

Breakaway is a soccer-inspired game that is played on a carpeted rectangular field, illustrated below. The field is divided by two bumps that span the width of the field, with a tower that is located in the middle of each bump that contains a tunnel in which robots may travel through. The two alliances (red and blue) compete against each other to score as many points as possible. There are six robots on the field at a time, three to each alliance, that may score points by moving the soccer balls into the goals that are located in the corners of the field. More points may be scored at the end of the game by having a robot hang from each of the towers. Even more points may be scored if a robot hanging from the tower has another robot hanging from them. The points can only be scored if the robots are elevated above the surface of the playing field.

Matches:

Each match in Breakaway is 2 minutes and 15 seconds long. The match starts with a 15-second autonomous period. The autonomous period is a time in which robots may only be operated from pre-programmed instructions and sensor feedback, NO human operation of the robots is allowed during this period. Following the autonomous period is the 2-minute teleoperated period, in which the human drivers are able to operate the robots using the controller systems.

Game Pieces:

The soccer balls used in Breakaway are standard size 5 soccer balls. These soccer balls are moved by the robots into the goals located in the corners of the field to score points. Once the balls are scored, the players use the tridents to return the balls to the playing field.

Scoring:

Each time a soccer ball is pushed through the goal, a team scores 1 point. Any robots that are hanging from the towers at the end of regulation are worth 2 points. Any robots that are hanging from a robot that is already hanging and is not in contact with the surface of the field is worth 3 points for the team.
